Pliers

Pliers and wrenches are invaluable tools that grip onto surfaces or surface parts and/or move or rotate objects within surfaces. Broadly and to varying degrees, pliers grip onto most objects and assist in cutting and splicing. There are many versions of both of these tools, so completing your job efficiently and safely can be accomplished by using the right one.

Types of Pliers

Picking the right pair of pliers for your job will increase productivity and will help ensure your safety throughout your task. But, a simple browsing through the pages of ToolsDirect.com reveals a plethora of different types of pliers. How do you know what pair of pliers is right for you? The categories of pliers can be divided up into the following categories (see the product pages for additional information on specific types of pliers):

  • Slip-Joint Pliers: These pliers can be used for many projects or tasks around the home simply because of their versatility. The term, “slip-joint,” refers to the fact that the pliers are able to be extended or reduced to encompass a wider or narrower object to which the pliers will be attached. Use these pliers for simple loosening or tightening nuts and bolts where real exertion of force is not necessary.
  • Linesman Pliers: These pliers are used for holding, manipulating, and cutting wire and thin metal. The term, “Lineman,” refers to the fact that electricians use them to shape and cut cords and lines. The grippers themselves assist in manipulating wire(s) and a cutting portion contained right in the pliers is used for that very purpose as well as for wire splicing. They vary in size and shape and the other variations of this type are Side-Cutting, Combination, Wide Jaw, and Needlenose Pliers.
  • Long-Nose Pliers: Used for shaping or twisting pliable metals and jewelry or getting into those hard-to-reach places, these pliers are very useful for many projects. Some versions also come with a side-cutting portion for added efficiency. Variations of this type are the Bent Long-Nose Pliers, which adds flexibility and that little bit of elbowroom in those tight spaces, and the Needlenose Pliers (previously mentioned under the Lineman’s category, this can be grouped in either category depending on the length of the nose and the presence of the wire cutting section).
  • Diagonal-Cutting Pliers: These pliers are like little clippers are generally more useful with the repeated cutting of things like thin metal or wires and even screws or nails. Channel-Type Pliers: The adjustable head of this type of pliers makes turning pipe fittings a breeze. Commonly called Water Pump Pliers, these pliers grip securely onto the surface to be adjusted or turned. Variations on this type are called Pump Pliers, Water Pliers, Tongue and Groove Pliers, Utility, Multi-track, Double Tongue and Groove, and Grooved Water Pump.
  • Pliers for Wires: We offer a few more useful varieties like the Wiring Tool, the Terminal Crimper, and the Cutter Stripper, which are very helpful with wire cutting and splicing.

Products you will find in this category are: Plier, Long Nose Plier, Locking Plier, Plier Sets
